Built over an underground river, the Garrick Theatre London is named after the Shakespearean actor, David Garrick. The historic site opened in the year 1889 and was financed by the playwright W.S. Gilbert. The original theatre, which could fit 800 people, was designed by Walter Emden and C.J. Phillips. In 1968, an active campaign by the Musician’s Union, Equity, and many theatre groups saved the Garrick Theatre from the proposed redevelopment of the Covent Garden.
Some of the notable plays that have been performed here include The Profligate, A Pair of Spectacles, The Wedding Guest, and No Sex Please, We’re British. More recent productions that have been performed at the Garrick Theatre are All on her Own, Harlequinade, Red Velvet, The Painkiller, and The Entertainer. The latest production that has been drawing the crowd to the Garrick Theatre is Young Frankenstein by Mel Brooks.

Young Frankenstein
Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein made its West End debut for the first time in September 2017. Inspired by the novel by Mary Shelley, this re-imagined version is a quirky musical that ran for two years till 2009 on Broadway. Following its success, the renewed play continues to be a favourite among theatre lovers and critics. The original Broadway production was directed by Susan Stroman and ran for 484 performances. Her and Mel Brooks have come together with a power packed team to recreate the magic of Young Frankenstein, this time on West End.
The Story
Young Frankenstein is based on the famed novel by Mary Shelley, and its Oscar nominated 1974 movie reproduction. As the story begins, a New York-based brain surgeon and professor inherits a Transylvanian castle and a laboratory from his slightly deranged grandfather, Victor Von Frankenstein. The young doctor’s dilemma is to either choose his grandfather’s legacy and continue with the crazy experiment of reanimating the dead, or to run away from this frightening inheritance as far as possible. Thrown into the crazy story are also the sparks that fly between Young Frankenstein and the attractive lab assistant, Inga. The story unfolds as a hilarious ride in the form of a parody of cult horror films.
