No one bears the burden of scars like a young girl trying to find her self-esteem. Violet is the moving story, based on the short story The Ugliest Pilgrim by Doris Betts, about a girl who suffers the burden of facial scars, a result of a childhood accident. The uplifting musical takes you along on her journey to find peace and healing from a preacher she believes is her emancipator. Self-worth is infinitely influenced by external validation, and that’s what two young men bring into the picture. Are all prejudices the same? Is love blind? Does faith heal or offer the power to bear the burden? Violet the musical attempts to ask these questions through its beautiful and enjoyable musical journey.
About the Show
Violet is written by Brian Crawley with music by Jeanine Tesori, who comes with a long list of theatre successes like Fun Home, Caroline, and Shrek The Musical. The UK performance will have Kaisa Hammarlund play the title role of Violet; she will be supported by a talented cast of Matthew Harvey, Jay Marsh, Simbi Akande, and Angelica Allen. The 60’s set including the iconic bus design is the work of Morgan Large and works exquisitely in transporting the audience back in time.
The Story
The musical opens in 1964 where a young Violet Karl is getting on to a bus in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. She is heading towards Tulsa with a fervent hope that a televangelist based there can help her disfigured face, a consequence of a childhood accident. At a stop on the way, she meets other passengers including two young army men, Flick who is a black sergeant and Monty a white corporal.
Flick knows the pain of having people judge him too soon because of how he looks and finds an instant connection with Violet. He doesn’t dismiss her like Monty, who is playful, teasing and wants Violet for himself. The bus makes a few more stops, and finally, after an eventful journey, she reaches Tulsa and meets the preacher. Watch ‘Violet’ and find out if the preacher heals her after all, and which of the two men, Flick or Monty, she ends up with!
