Joe’s Pub Celebrates Pride with a Can’t-Miss Line-Up

Rainbow flags aplenty will be waving across New York City as Pride 2018 descends upon the city. While there are plenty of happenings across the five boroughs throughout June, consider cooling off at Joe’s Pub with one of these pride-centric performances:

JUSTIN SAYRE’S GAY-B-C’S: A BRIEF HISTORY OF GAY CULTURE IN 5 PARTS
Justin Sayre returns to Joe’s with a new show, Justin Sayre’s gAy-B-C’s: A Brief History of Gay Culture in Five Parts (Part 3, I-M, on June 3; Part 4, N-R, on June 3). Each show moves methodically through the rich legacy of Gay and Queer Culture. Touching on everything from Auntie Mame to Zebra Print, Sayre looks at the legends and lore of gay culture with stories, songs and a lot of laughs. Each night covers different material, so don’t miss a thing.

LARRY OWENS IN LIZA ’79, CONCEIVED AND DIRECTED BY BEN RIMALOWER
For the first time since his groundbreaking Joe’s Pub production of Leslie Kritzer Is Patti LuPone At Les Mouches, Ben Rimalower utilizes an evocative moment in time, Liza Minnelli’s legendary 1979 run at Carnegie Hall, as the blueprint for an exciting, original immersive theater experience. Larry Owens brings his inimitable stamp to the songs, dances, and, perhaps most deliciously, the between-song banter of Minnelli’s concert. He will not be “playing” Liza; this is neither drag nor impression, but something wholly fresh and transporting.

By simply and satisfyingly assuming the position of the diva, front and center, Larry Owens in LIZA ’79 offers a provocative parody of pop culture then and now. LIZA ’79 will feature music direction and arrangements by Matt Aument and choreography by Jason Wise.

Alan Cumming was described by Time Magazine as one of the most fun people in show business, by The New York Times as a ‘bawdy, countercultural sprite’ and the New York Observer as a “frolicky pansexual sex symbol for the new millennium.” But he thinks you shouldn’t believe everything you read.

Cumming has performed with Jay Z and Liza with a Z; he has won a Tony, hosted the Tony Awards and been nominated for an Emmy for doing so; he has a soap called Cumming In A Bar, and a bar called Club Cumming; he made back to back films with Stanley Kubrick and the Spice Girls; he has played God, the Devil, Hitler, the Pope, a teleporting superhero, all the parts in Macbeth, General Batista of Cuba, a goat opposite Sean Connery, Dionysus, a Smurf (twice) the EmCee in Cabaret (thrice), a James Bond baddie – oh, and political spinmeister Eli Gold on seven seasons of The Good Wife for which he received multiple Golden Globe, Emmy and SAG award nominations; he is the author of five books including a #1 New York Times best-selling memoir; he appeared on Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, topless in Playgirl and naked on the cover of his second album.

BECCA BLACKWELL: THEY THEMSELF & SCHMERM
Part classic stand-up comedy special, part teen zine vomit confessional. They, Themself and Schmerm is Becca Blackwell’s disturbingly hilarious personal tale of being adopted into a Midwestern religious family, trained to be a girl, molested, and plagued by the question, “How do I become a man and do I even want that?” Becca engages in loving confrontation with the audience, asking what it truly means to be authentic in these meat carcasses.

Becca Blackwell is a NYC-based trans actor, performer and writer. Existing between genders, and preferring the pronoun “they,” Blackwell works collaboratively with playwrights and directors to expand our sense of personhood and the body through performance. Some of their collaborations have been with Young Jean Lee, Half Straddle, Jennifer Miller’s Circus Amok, Richard Maxwell, Sharon Hayes, Theater of the Two-Headed Calf and Lisa D’Amour. Written and performed by Becca Blackwell, directed by and developed with Ellie Heyman, in collaboration with Jill Pangallo and Jess Barbagallo.
