Day 1 in Barcelona

Your first day in Barcelona can be concisely summed in 4 words - aimless wandering and endless exploring. Hang your camera around your neck and get lost in the streets of old Barcelona, their bustling market areas and end your day in an ancient model village turned museum that takes you through years of Catalonian history.

Popularly known as the Barrio Gótico, this quaint neighborhood is part of the old city (Cituat Vella) and unfolds from La Rambla to the Via Laietana in a labyrinth of meandering cobbled streets with colourful walls. This charming part of the city nestled in a bohemian aura is exactly where you should start your Barcelona holiday and you’ll know why we say so once you are strolling the streets of Barrio Gótico. While you’re here , you are bound to stumble upon history drenched alleyways around the La Seu cathedral, artsy cafes tucked away in cosy nooks, peppy bars overflowing with cocktails, human-castling in Plaça Jaume, the ancient synagogue at El Call and a lot more that will have you wandering about aimlessly ( in awe however) for at least 3 hours. We say, turn off your GPS and get lost on your very first day in Barcelona! Grab a meal while you’re and smear some gelato on your upper lip too.

While you're at Barri Gothic, watch out for :

Touring the Barrio Gótico on a bamboo cycle is a highly recommended experience. This is a guided tour which takes you through the old soul of the city, around the best of Barrio Gótico with special attention to discover the unseen street arts and murals of Barcelona. Make your way out of the Gothic Quarter and find your way to the famous La Rambla which happens to be just a stone’s throw away. Undoubtedly the most touristy street in Barcelona, this tourist magnet is bustling for a worthy reason. This beautiful boulevard is flanked by greenery and offers a sneak peak into the rich Catalan culture through its inspiring architecture. Its name is said to be coined after a seasonal stream (raml in Arabic) that ran through here aeons ago.

La Rambla is divided into 7 sections and from north to south they are in this order :

Rambla de Catalunya | Rambla de Canaletes | Rambla dels Estudis AKA Rambla dels Ocells (Rambla of the Birds) | Rambla de Sant Josep AKA Rambla de les Flors | Rambla del Caputxins | Rambla Santa Monica | Rambla de Mar

One of the first things you see when you enter La Rambla from Barri Gotic is the Font de Canaletes, a fine metal drinking fountain whose water supposedly emerges from what were once known as the springs of Canaletes. Take a sip of this water ( it is safe to drink) and myth goes that your chances of coming back to Barcelona is said to up a notch. This water fountain also happens to be the meeting point for the FC Barcelona fans after winning a match! However, La Ramblas is mostly famous for its street performers and human statues. These human statues do an amazing job with their costumes and look so real that you may pass them without realising they are human! Through in a euro for their talent maybe? Hop into one of the many chilled café terraces here and lull yourself into a calm amongst the chaos. Shoppers are in for a treat here as the market stalls selling countless everythings and nothings are a good pastime.

After sauntering through La Rambla, head to the La Boqueria. You may not want to buy groceries on your first day in Barcelona, but you surely want to feast your eyes on the freshest local produce ever. Sip on some homemade wine from the tiny stalls around and walk through an assortment of meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, flowers and just about everything your kitchen would ever require to whip up a delicious meal. If you happen to be a culinary enthusiast, enroll yourself for a cooking class at La Boqueria. You will need about 4 hours in hand, but it is said to be the absolute best!

Poble Espanyol which translates to Spanish Village, is a unique combination of architecture, contemporary art, traditional crafts, artisan shops, and authentic culinary delights, in a pleasant setting free from the hordes of Barcelona. This open air architecture museum was constructed in 1929 for the Barcelona International Exhibition as a simulation of Spanish architecture and craftsmanship. Though it was to be demolished after the exhibition, it thankfully was not due to the rave reviews it garnered. Today, it stands proud with 117 buildings architected like buildings from Spanish regions and is a living reflection of the soul of a Spain. It cashes in 1,300,000 visitors a year, is open on all 365 days and is the perfect place to consume a copious gulp of Spain’s diverse cultural sangria. A charming space with over 20 craft shops spanning from pottery, leather, jewellery, glass and display of over 300 contemporary pieces by Picasso, Dalí, and Miró, the Poble Espanyol is a rewarding stroll all in all.

Things to watch out for at Poble Espanyol :

  • Classic Castillan monuments
  • The narrow, white streets of Andalusia
  • Aragon’s stone houses
  • Pre-Romanic Asturian architecture
  • Traditional Paella
  • Flamenco shows
  • Fran Daurel Museum
  • Guinovart gallery
  • Sculpture garden

On your way back from the Poble Espanyol, catch a sprightly light and sound show at the ornamental Montjuïc Magic Fountain which displays a wondrous melody of music, water acrobatics and lights in over 50 shades and hues.

Barcelona is synonymous to Antoni Gaudí and to kick start your sampling of Gaudi’s architectural wonders, nothing like the Park Güell. A UNESCO listed World Heritage Site, the Park Güell is an enchanting space where Gaudi tried his hands at landscape gardening. The Park Guell clocks in over 4 million visitors each year despite the fact that they allow only 400 people into the park every 30 minutes. This wonder was finished over a span of 15 years (1900-1915) and the construction is said to have originally sprouted off as a housing site complex for the movers and shakers of Barcelona. However, it became a commercial flop and panned out as a city park and up till a few years ago, it was an open to all public park. Due to the high tourist influx and need for maintenance, it is now a gated park with an entrance fee, guided tours and the like.

The Park Guell is full of secrets and references and there is a reason for every stone that is set in place inside this park. To enjoy this park to the fullest, it is highly recommended to book a guided tour pre hand so that you can comprehend Gaudi’s work and its magnitude. While you’re here, make sure to visit the Casa-Museu Gaudí, a slender house converted into a museum where Gaudi lived for 20 years ( 1906-1926). It contains the furniture used by him and many other memboralias. Before leaving, gently touch the ceramic dragon. It is said to bring you luck!

The captivating Sagrada Família is the most iconic attraction in Barcelona and is undoubtedly the magnum opus of the world renowned architect Antoni Gaudí. I would go to the extent of saying that your trip to Barcelona is pointless without a visit to the Sagrada Familia and there are many reason why. Ranked the #1 thing to do in Barcelona by Tripadvisor, this modernist masterpiece is Gaudi’s best work ( read lifelong obsession) and it has earned this status without being completed! It has been under construction since 1882 ( completing 136 years in 2018) and despite the end not remotely in sight, it amasses tourists like no other place in Barcelona. One of the primary reasons for the prolonged construction time is the fact that the Sagrada Familia is an expiatory church, and hence its progress depends on private donations since its outset. Gaudi himself said However, Gaudí’s masterpiece has entered its final stretch of construction is touted to completed by 2026.While you’re here, make it a point to visit the museum and the crypt in which Gaudi is buried.

Colonia Guell

23 km to the south-west of Barcelona in the suburban town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló lies the Colonia Guell, an unfinished work by Antoni Gaudí. A train from Place de Espanya will take you about 20 minutes to reach right outside the Colonia Guell. For those who have become a fan of Antoni Gaudi’s work over the days in Barcelona, the Colonia Guell will expose you to Gaudi’s whole body of work as this was the testing ground before he began the construction of his magnum opus - Sagrada Familia. If you are an architecture aficionado , this is one of the most intriguing masterpieces in Barcelona and worth the travel from the main city.

This construction of Colonia Guell began in 1890 under the orders of Eusebi Guell when he was forced to move his textile factory away from the social conflicts uprising in Barcelona. He commissioned the design authorities to his friend cum architect Antoni Gaudi who was given free reign to design a colony around the factory for the textile workers and their families with houses, schools, convents, community centre, recreational spaces etc to kindle worker loyalty.

The highlight of this industrial colony is the Church also known as Gaudi’s Crypt within the premises. Though unfinished , it is an impressive structure built with a touch of nature architected with beautiful stained glasses, catenary arches, archaic furniture, naves without buttresses, intricate wooden pews and a basaltic stone brick exterior embedded with decorative broken mosaic tiling. This curious structure built in typical Modernism style was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 2005 and surprisingly remains one of the relatively lesser known places in Barcelona, hence gifting you a serene visit with barely any crowds.

While you’re here, make sure to see the "Homenatge a la Barceloneta", a leaning monument on the beach , a popular photo spot.If you’re looking to sip a drink while lounging on the beach, look out for chiringuitos, shack like bars on the beach that serve delicious cocktails at an exorbitant price. The only downside of this beach is the constant pester by vendors trying to sell you drinks to paellas to henna tattoos and massages. If you master the art of ignoring within the first 10 minutes of your arrival, you’ll have a great time.
