The real essence of Barcelona is ensconced between the cobbled alleyways of old Barcelona and structures of Gaudi's marvels speckled around the city. This 3 day itinerary of Barcelona takes you through this very essence with a concretely crafted plan that ticks off all the prime attractions and the lesser known gems of Barcelona in just 3 days! If you plan to stay in Barcelona for 4 days, we have you backed then as well.
Day 1 in Barcelona
Your first day in Barcelona can be concisely summed in 4 words - aimless wandering and endless exploring. Hang your camera around your neck and get lost in the streets of old Barcelona, their bustling market areas and end your walking tour in an ancient model village turned museum that takes you through years of Catalonian history. After sauntering through the lanes of Barcelona, soak your feet in the cold water of the Mediterranean Sea and spend your night on the glittering sands of Barcelona beach.
Popularly known as the Barrio Gótico, this quaint neighborhood is part of the old city (Cituat Vella) and unfolds from La Rambla to the Via Laietana in a labyrinth of meandering cobbled streets with colourful walls. This charming part of the city nestled in a bohemian aura is exactly where you should start your Barcelona holiday and you’ll know why we say so once you are strolling the streets of Barrio Gótico. While you’re here , you are bound to stumble upon history drenched alleyways around the La Seu cathedral, artsy cafes tucked away in cosy nooks, peppy bars overflowing with cocktails, human-castling in Plaça Jaume, the ancient synagogue at El Call and a lot more that will have you wandering about aimlessly ( in awe however) for at least 3 hours. We say, turn off your GPS and get lost on your very first day in Barcelona! Grab a meal while you’re and smear some gelato on your upper lip too.
While you're at Barri Gothic, watch out for :
- Gothic Cathedral
- Sant Jaume Square
- Bisbe Irurita Street
- Church of Santa Maria del Pi
- Plaça del Rei (King’s Square)
- Museum of History of Barcelona on the King’s Square
- Plaça Reial (Royal Square)
- Plaça Sant Felip Neri
- Plaça de la Generalitat
Touring the Barrio Gótico on a bamboo cycle is a highly recommended experience. This is a guided tour which takes you through the old soul of the city, around the best of Barrio Gótico with special attention to discover the unseen street arts and murals of Barcelona. Make your way out of the Gothic Quarter and find your way to the famous La Rambla which happens to be just a stone’s throw away. Undoubtedly the most touristy street in Barcelona, this tourist magnet is bustling for a worthy reason. This beautiful boulevard is flanked by greenery and offers a sneak peak into the rich Catalan culture through its inspiring architecture. Its name is said to be coined after a seasonal stream (raml in Arabic) that ran through here aeons ago.
La Rambla is divided into 7 sections and from north to south they are in this order :
Rambla de Catalunya | Rambla de Canaletes | Rambla dels Estudis AKA Rambla dels Ocells (Rambla of the Birds) | Rambla de Sant Josep AKA Rambla de les Flors | Rambla del Caputxins | Rambla Santa Monica | Rambla de Mar
One of the first things you see when you enter La Rambla from Barri Gotic is the Font de Canaletes, a fine metal drinking fountain whose water supposedly emerges from what were once known as the springs of Canaletes. Take a sip of this water ( it is safe to drink) and myth goes that your chances of coming back to Barcelona is said to up a notch. This water fountain also happens to be the meeting point for the FC Barcelona fans after winning a match! However, La Ramblas is mostly famous for its street performers and human statues. These human statues do an amazing job with their costumes and look so real that you may pass them without realising they are human! Through in a euro for their talent maybe? Hop into one of the many chilled café terraces here and lull yourself into a calm amongst the chaos. Shoppers are in for a treat here as the market stalls selling countless everythings and nothings are a good pastime.
After sauntering through La Rambla, head to the La Boqueria. You may not want to buy groceries on your first day in Barcelona, but you surely want to feast your eyes on the freshest local produce ever. Sip on some homemade wine from the tiny stalls around and walk through an assortment of meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, flowers and just about everything your kitchen would ever require to whip up a delicious meal. If you happen to be a culinary enthusiast, enroll yourself for a cooking class at La Boqueria. You will need about 4 hours in hand, but it is said to be the absolute best!
Things to watch out for at La Ramblas :
- Museu de l' Erotica ( Erotica Museum )
- Gran Teatre del Liceu
- Columbus Monument
- Carrer dels Tallers
- El Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona Contemporary Art Museum

Day 2 in Barcelona
Dedicate your second day to the genius behind the stunning architecture environing Barcelona. Antoni Gaudí, the spanish architect who has adorned the city with his one of a kind style of Catalan Modernism deserves a day devoted to appreciating his creativity and years of toil. If you're traveling with children, you can complete the 2 architectural wonders by 01:00 PM and move on to the Barcelona Zoo & Barcelona Aquarium post lunch. If you're a football fan, accomodate 45 minutes to 1 hour to visit the famous Camp Nou Stadium and take a guided tour of the locker room, trophy room etc..
Barcelona is synonymous to Antoni Gaudí and to kick start your sampling of Gaudi’s architectural wonders, nothing like the Park Güell. A UNESCO listed World Heritage Site, the Park Güell is an enchanting space where Gaudi tried his hands at landscape gardening. The Park Guell clocks in over 4 million visitors each year despite the fact that they allow only 400 people into the park every 30 minutes. This wonder was finished over a span of 15 years (1900-1915) and the construction is said to have originally sprouted off as a housing site complex for the movers and shakers of Barcelona. However, it became a commercial flop and panned out as a city park and up till a few years ago, it was an open to all public park. Due to the high tourist influx and need for maintenance, it is now a gated park with an entrance fee, guided tours and the like.
The Park Guell is full of secrets and references and there is a reason for every stone that is set in place inside this park. To enjoy this park to the fullest, it is highly recommended to book a guided tour pre hand so that you can comprehend Gaudi’s work and its magnitude. While you’re here, make sure to visit the Casa-Museu Gaudí, a slender house converted into a museum where Gaudi lived for 20 years ( 1906-1926). It contains the furniture used by him and many other memboralias. Before leaving, gently touch the ceramic dragon. It is said to bring you luck!

It has been under construction since 1882 ( completing 136 years in 2018) and despite the end not remotely in sight, it amasses tourists like no other place in Barcelona. One of the primary reasons for the prolonged construction time is the fact that the Sagrada Familia is an expiatory church, and hence its progress depends on private donations since its outset.
