‘The Band’s Visit’ (Photo: Matthew Murphy)
Hosted by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban, this year’s Tony Awards proved to be not quite as sleepy as we expected. The pair’s dry humor carried the patter between awards, along with plenty of wardrobe changes and expected musical interludes.
Perhaps the strangest moment of the evening was the mash-up of Lifetime Achievement Awards presented to Chita Rivera and Andrew Lloyd Webber, which edited their bodies of work into a disparate video montage that fell short. Of course, that doesn’t compare to Robert De Niro’s f-bombs that had CBS censors at the ready. A moving tribute by the cast of Dear Evan Hansen honored those who passed during the past season, including Sam Shepard, Barbara Cook, Peter Hall, Rachel Rockwell, and others.
