Mamma Mia! London is hosted by the Novello Theatre, a large West End venue on Aldwych in the city of Westminster, which is usually home to musicals. It was designed by W. G. R. Sprague and has a capacity of 1105. The theatre has had many names over the years, and took its current name in 2005, in honor of Ivor Novello, a popular Welsh composer and actor. Notable productions at this venue include Rhinoceros starring Laurence Olivier and Maggie Smith, Frankie Howard in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, and the Broadway production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof starring Adrian Lester and James Earl Jones.
Our guide below will give you all the information you need about the show, and will discuss the best ways to get Mamma Mia London tickets.
About the Show
This lovable and sunny musical first opened in London in 1999 at Prince Edward Theatre before transferring to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004, and finally moving to the Novello Theatre in 2012. Based on the songs of the pop sensation ABBA, Mamma Mia! London has stolen the hearts of audiences worldwide – after all, who hasn’t grooved to ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘SOS’, ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Waterloo’? Set on a Greek island, this enchanting tale of love, comedy and friendship unfolds as on the eve of her wedding, the protagonist Sophie delves deeper into her past and that of her mother’s. The story has been adapted on Broadway, and as a movie starring Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep. This ultimate feel-good musical is bound to be an enjoyable experience for children and adults alike!
The Story of Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia! is set on a colorful and idyllic Greek island where 20-year-old Sophie Sheridan is getting married. Sophie’s focus, however, is not on her wedding, but on finding her real father, so that he may walk her down the aisle, and give her away on her special day. After secretly delving into her mother Donna’s past via a diary she wrote the year that Sophie was born, Sophie invites three possible candidates to the island in the hopes of learning the identity of her father – though she has little faith in their actually showing up.
But on the eve of the wedding, when all three men – Harry, Sam, and Bill – arrive, Sophie has no idea how to go about finding her real father. Donna, too, must face her free-loving past when the three men appear. Which man will walk Sophie down the aisle? And after 20 years, will any of them want to rekindle a romance with Donna? Find out in this delightful story of romance and friendship!
Performance
Mamma Mia! London has been seen by nearly 8 million people, played over 7,500 performances and has broken box office records in all three of its London homes. The original West End production has won many accolades, including a Laurence Olivier.
Mamma Mia! Reviews
“quite apart from having some of the finest pop songs ever written, Mamma Mia! is the ultimate feel-good tale of love conquering all. It is completely uncynical and consistently compelling – it's the perfect show for someone who says they don't like theatre, or who "doesn't do musicals". ”
– The Guardian
“One of the most successful musicals ever.”
– The Evening Standard
