Hop into one of the many chilled café terraces here and lull yourself into a calm amongst the chaos. Shoppers are in for a treat here as the market stalls selling countless everythings and nothings are a good pastime.
After sauntering through La Rambla, head to the La Boqueria. You may not want to buy groceries on your first day in Barcelona, but you surely want to feast your eyes on the freshest local produce ever. Sip on some homemade wine from the tiny stalls around and walk through an assortment of meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, flowers and just about everything your kitchen would ever require to whip up a delicious meal. A UNESCO listed World Heritage Site, the Park Güell is an enchanting space where Gaudi tried his hands at landscape gardening. 23 km to the south-west of Barcelona in the suburban town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló lies the Colonia Guell, an unfinished work by Antoni Gaudí. A train from Place de Espanya will take you about 20 minutes to reach right outside the Colonia Guell. For those who have become a fan of Antoni Gaudi’s work over the days in Barcelona, the Colonia Guell will expose you to Gaudi’s whole body of work as this was the testing ground before he began the construction of his magnum opus - Sagrada Familia. If you are an architecture aficionado , this is one of the most intriguing masterpieces in Barcelona and worth the travel from the main city.
This construction of Colonia Guell began in 1890 under the orders of Eusebi Guell when he was forced to move his textile factory away from the social conflicts uprising in Barcelona. He commissioned the design authorities to his friend cum architect Antoni Gaudi who was given free reign to design a colony around the factory for the textile workers and their families with houses, schools, convents, community centre, recreational spaces etc to kindle worker loyalty.
The highlight of this industrial colony is the Church also known as Gaudi’s Crypt within the premises. Though unfinished , it is an impressive structure built with a touch of nature architected with beautiful stained glasses, catenary arches, archaic furniture, naves without buttresses, intricate wooden pews and a basaltic stone brick exterior embedded with decorative broken mosaic tiling. There are 2 things to look forward to while in Montjuic- the Teleferic De Montjuic ( cable car to Montjuic) and the Montjuic Castle by itself!
