Located at 227 West 42nd Street, the American Airlines theatre is a historic, Italian Renaissance style Broadway theatre. The American Airlines was built by the Selwyn brothers, Edgar and Archie, in 1918, and was originally named after them. After years of neglect, the theatre was restored to its former glory and reopened as the American Airlines on June 30, 2000 in honor of its major sponsor. The American Airlines theatre was originally used to house major musical and dramatic shows, but functioned as a cinema hall and even as a temporary home for the Times Square Visitors Center. Presently, it houses the Roundabout’s major dramatic shows. Some of the most prominent productions mounted on the American Airlines theatre include, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Betrayal, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, 12 Angry Men, The Constant Wife, The Pajama Game, Les liaisons dangereuses, John Lithgow: Stories by Heart, and more!
Currently, the American Airlines theatre is prepping to host a production of Travesties adapted from the 1974 play by Tom Stoppard. Travesties focuses on Henry Carr, who reminisces about Zürich in 1917 during World War I. The play follows his interactions with Tristan Tzara during the rise of Dada, James Joyce while he was writing Ulysses and Lenin leading toward the Russian Revolution.

Playing At The American Airlines Theatre
Travesties premiered in Aldwych Theater in London in 1974, and has since become one of Tom Stoppard’s most famous plays. Having won a Tony for Best Play in 1976, the play explores the themes of revolution in art and politics, and the role of the artist within the same, all performed in the style of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Ernest. The play, directed by Patrick Marber, was the first in the history of the Menier Chocolate Factory to sell out ahead of its first preview. This London revival transfers to Broadway in 2018, with Tom Hollander reprising his role as Henry Carr. Travesties will open on 24 April 2018 (previews 29 March) at the Roundabout Theatre Company's American Airlines Theater in New York with a closing date set for June 17th 2018.
The Story

Handy Tips
- Please turn off all electronic devices when entering the American Airlines theatre.
- Photography and recording devices of any kind inside the theatre are strictly prohibited by law.
- The theatre is air conditioned. Please dress appropriately or bring along a coat or a jacket if it’s warm outside.
- Avoid the last three orchestra rows (N, O, and P) and the extreme corner seats of both the orchestra and mezzanine since the view from there isn’t all that great.
- The mezzanine overhangs the orchestra from row H. Do keep that in mind while you book your tickets online.
- There are a lot of restaurants and hotels that have tied up with the theatre to offer you great discounts and deals. Check with the staff if you are interested in staying/eating near the theatre.
- If you’re interested in booking the box seats, please note that you will have a limited view of the extreme side of the stage and will probably miss a few entrance and exit bits. While it won’t impact your enjoyment of the show in any way, it’s something to be aware of.
- There is no center aisle in the mezzanine; just long rows of seats that you enter at one end or the other. So if you have a seat near either end, be prepared to get up and down a lot as people squeeze by you to get to the seats closer to the middle.
