Justin Sayre returns to Joe’s Pub at The Public with his new show, Justin Sayre’s gAy-B-C’s: A Brief History of Gay Culture in Five Parts. The first two installments will be presented on Saturday, February 24 at 9:30 p.m. (A through D) and Sunday, February 25 at 9:30 p.m. (E through H). Each evening moves methodically through the rich legacy of Gay and Queer Culture. Touching on everything from Auntie Mame to Zebra Print, Sayre looks at the legends and lore of gay culture with stories, songs and laughs. Each night covers different material, so don’t miss a thing.

If you’ve been living under a cultural rock, Justin Sayre is a writer and performer best known for his downtown variety show The Meeting*, which recently finished its final season at Joe’s Pub. Praised for his “deeply passionate soul and acerbic wit” by The New York Times, he worked as a staff writer on the CBS sitcom “2 Broke Girls” and has appeared opposite Lisa Kudrow on HBO’s “The Comeback.”

Sayre has been described by Michael Musto in the Village Voice as “Oscar Wilde meets Whoopi Goldberg,” was recently hailed as one the “Funniest People in Brooklyn” by Brooklyn Magazine and among “LA’s 16 Most Talented LGBT Comics” by Frontiers Magazine.

The Broadway Blog described Sayre as “big in every sense of the word. His bearish looks are matched by a giant wit and intelligence. While many gay performers and icons prize cattiness and cynicism, Sayre is big-hearted, warm and generous.”

Justin’s first young adult novel, Husky – released by Penguin Books in 2015 – was called “a moving journey of self-discovery and a gratifying coming-of-age story” by Publishers Weekly. When the follow-up Pretty hit bookstores last summer, Kirkus Review raved “coming-of-age never looked so beautiful.”

Justin is the host of the podcast “Sparkle & Circulate,” the official monthly podcast of the International Order of Sodomites. “Sparkle & Circulate” was recently named among the “10 Comedy Podcasts You Should Listen To” by Backstage. Guests have included Jake Shears, Lady Bunny, Randy Harrison, Alaska 5000, Nellie McKay, Justin Vivian Bond, Michael Musto, R&B legend Sarah Dash and more.
