Following successful runs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Boston, and at New York’s Abrons Arts Center, Becca Blackwell, trans actor, performer, writer and recipient of the Doris Duke Impact Artist Award, will perform their laugh-out-loud family tragedy Becca Blackwell: They, Themself and Schmerm at Joe’s Pub for a one-night-only presentation on Thursday, February 22.

Described by BOMB Magazine as a “who-the-f*ck-cares-let-the-love-in” socio-cultural transformation, the play is an homage to all the things that make up Becca—from early abuse and love affairs to bathroom blunders and circus performer antics, to a complicated relationship with mom.
They, Themself and Schmerm (schmerm being the sound that people make as they try to figure out Becca’s gender: she…he…hrmmm) ultimately charts the path to self-actualization in all one’s raw, fantastic gloriousness. Becca engages in loving confrontation with the audience, asking what it truly means to be authentic in these meat carcasses.
Becca’s disturbingly hilarious personal tale, inspired by a self-produced video by Corey Haim called Me, Myself and I, came to the stage through collaboration with acclaimed artist and performer Jill Pangallo (Mediocre and Loving It!, Your Main Thing) and celebrated trans playwright and performer Jess Barbagallo (My Old Man (And Other Stories), Harry Potter and the Cursed Child). The play was directed by and developed with Ellie Heyman, director of theater, music and film best known for The Traveling Imaginary, a theatrical rock show rated“top five shows of the year” by NPR and a Time Out “Critic’s Pick” on two continents.
